Expression – Revelation of Self

In the recently held Coaching Retreat, in which I participated, the theme was “ Expression – Connection – Contribution”. Gaurav Arora, the architect of Coaching Master Mind and my teacher, conducted several activities to bring out the true expression of each of us. The theme Expression kindled my thoughts to explore it further.

We all know that expression is a fundamental aspect of human experience and it allows us to connect with others, share our experiences, and make sense of the world around us. To me the choices of expression—whether through language, art, or behavior—reveal the values, beliefs, and intentions that define our existence.

We see expressions within us and around us and we experience it all time. “The goal of art was the vital expression of self” (Alfred Stieglitz) and even “The budget is not just a collection of numbers, but an expression of our values and aspirations” (Jack Lew).

Besides human expression, what has touched me is the expression of Nature and the animals.

Nature, in all its splendor, speaks a language that transcends words. It is a silent poetry in action. From the gentle sway of trees to the rhythmic crashing of waves on the shore, it is continuously expressing itself, offering a profound connection between the physical and spiritual realms. This expression is not merely a display of beauty but a manifestation of life and consciousness.

One of nature’s most profound expressions that I admire is its cycle of life and death, which reflects the inevitable flow of existence. The blooming of a flower, followed by its withering and death, symbolizes the transient nature of life. Yet, within this cycle, there is renewal—seeds are sown, and new life begins!

Beyond its aesthetic beauty, nature has always served as a teacher to me. From the way plants adapt to their environment to the migratory patterns of birds, nature demonstrates resilience, patience, and the wisdom of timing.

We should enjoy the expression of nature and it is an ongoing, silent dialogue. But, when observed closely, it reveals profound truths about life, death, rebirth, and the interconnectedness of all things.

Similarly, the way animals expresses is beyond one’s imagination. They use a wide range of vocal, physical, and chemical signals to express their needs, emotions, and social bonds. Can anyone miss the Birds vocal expressions – songs and calls of birds for mating, marking territory, or warning others of danger.

The expression of love by dogs at home and the expression of joy through the playful behaviour are a sight to watch! They do bark, growl, whine, and howl to express a range of emotions, from excitement and happiness to fear and aggression.

Does anyone know that Elephants express through infrasonic calls, low-frequency sounds that can travel several kilometers and are used for social bonding and coordination within a herd?

It worries me when some people choose not to express freely and openly. It may be due to fear of judgement, rejection, low self esteem and vulnerability. I wish they get inspired by looking at Nature and animals and unshackle themselves from all negativities.

I believe expression is an essential part of self-revelation. Philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre and Martin Heidegger assert that through expression, we reveal our authentic selves to the world. I see expression as a mode of self-discovery and self-definition. Let us not hold back our expressions and let it flow like a river and mirror the inner values and beliefs.
